Answer engines have changed how people discover and compare suppliers, but they have not created a guaranteed shortcut to visibility. Google says its existing SEO foundations remain relevant to AI Overviews and AI Mode, with no special schema or machine-readable “AI file” required. OpenAI and Microsoft provide their own crawler controls and reporting, and those product behaviours can change.
The durable opportunity is to publish the clearest, most current, best-evidenced answer for a commercially relevant audience, make it technically accessible, and connect discovery to a trustworthy conversion path. “AEO” or “GEO” is useful shorthand only if it produces better content and measurement—not a new layer of keyword-stuffed pages.
This guide reflects primary platform and UK sources checked on 31 July 2026. Features, country availability, crawlers, reports, and interfaces can change after that date. No technique can guarantee crawling, indexing, ranking, inclusion, citation, traffic, or leads.
Start with the buyer decision
Choose topics where the organisation has real experience, evidence, and a useful next step. Map the questions a prospective customer asks while recognising a problem, comparing approaches, checking risk, building a business case, and choosing a supplier.
Useful inputs include:
- qualified sales calls and lost-deal reasons;
- support and implementation questions;
- internal search and site-search data;
- Search Console and Bing Webmaster query patterns;
- regulator and standards updates;
- product telemetry and outcome data;
- subject-matter expert interviews; and
- customer language, with permission and anonymisation where needed.
Prioritise a small cluster around one service and audience. A page about “AI automation” is unlikely to help a UK operations director decide which invoice exception can be automated, what data is needed, who approves it, and when to stop. Specificity creates usefulness and distinct evidence.
Build an answer asset, not a word-count target
A strong page should give the direct answer early, then earn trust through detail. Use:
- a precise scope and jurisdiction;
- a visible publication and substantive update date;
- named authorship or accountable editorial ownership;
- definitions that remove ambiguity;
- original operating experience, data, examples, or analysis;
- clear source links near time-sensitive claims;
- tables, checklists, and decision criteria where they help;
- limitations, failure modes, and alternatives;
- practical metrics and next actions; and
- a conversion path that matches the page’s promise.
Do not manufacture “original research” from invented numbers or present generated examples as customer results. Separate observed facts, third-party claims, and your own inference.
Google’s December 2025 guidance on generative AI content says automation can help research and structure, but mass generation without added value may breach its scaled-content abuse policy. The question is not whether AI touched the draft; it is whether accountable people added accuracy, relevance, originality, and value.
Use the same foundations for Google AI features
Google’s May 2026 AI features guidance says there are no additional technical requirements or special optimisation for AI Overviews or AI Mode. A supporting page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet, but eligibility does not guarantee indexing or serving.
The practical checklist remains familiar:
- allow Googlebot through
robots.txt, CDN, and hosting controls; - return stable, useful content in crawlable HTML;
- use descriptive titles, headings, and internal links;
- keep canonical, sitemap, language, and status signals consistent;
- make important information available as text;
- use high-quality images or video when relevant;
- keep Business Profile and Merchant Center information current where applicable;
- provide a good mobile and page experience; and
- inspect important URLs in Search Console after material changes.
Google reports AI feature traffic within the overall Web search type in Search Console. That means the standard report does not isolate every AI appearance or explain causality. Pair search metrics with landing-page behaviour and qualified outcomes.
Keep structured data honest and visible
Structured data can help systems understand eligible content, but it does not create authority and it does not guarantee a rich result. Google’s general structured-data guidelines require markup to be relevant, current, original, non-misleading, and consistent with visible content.
Implement only types that match the page and platform documentation. Typical site-wide work includes accurate Organization, WebSite, breadcrumb, article, product, local business, or service-related information where eligible and truthful. Do not add fake reviews, unsupported awards, invented authors, hidden FAQ answers, or schema for content users cannot see.
Validate syntax, then manually compare every material property with the rendered page and source system. Keep prices, availability, addresses, dates, authors, and ratings synchronised. A passing validator establishes machine-readable form, not ranking or factual truth.
Manage crawler choices separately
Crawler controls are product-specific. OpenAI’s current crawler documentation separates:
OAI-SearchBot, used for ChatGPT search inclusion;GPTBot, used for content that may help train generative foundation models; andChatGPT-User, used for certain user-triggered visits and not for automatic search crawling.
A publisher can allow OAI-SearchBot while disallowing GPTBot. OpenAI notes that search systems may take around 24 hours to adjust after a robots.txt change. Review the live documentation and published IP ranges; do not copy a stale bot list from a third-party blog.
Google uses Googlebot and standard preview controls for AI features inside Search, while Google-Extended applies to some other training and grounding uses. Bing says it respects content-owner preferences in robots.txt.

Blocking broad crawlers can reduce search discovery; allowing all crawlers can conflict with content or licensing strategy. Make an explicit decision rather than treating every AI bot as equivalent.
Measure visibility without pretending causation
Bing introduced AI Performance in Webmaster Tools in February 2026. It reports citation counts, cited pages, trends, and sampled grounding-query phrases across supported Microsoft AI experiences. Bing is explicit that citations are not rankings, traffic, authority, or importance.
Use a measurement ladder:
- Technical eligibility: crawl success, index coverage, canonical health, structured-data validity.
- Search visibility: non-branded impressions, clicks, landing pages, query groups, and geography.
- AI visibility: platform-reported citations where available and dated manual observations.
- Engagement: useful actions, return visits, source downloads, and assisted journeys.
- Commercial outcome: qualified enquiries, accepted opportunities, pipeline, revenue, and sales-cycle quality.
Annotate content changes and compare sensible time windows, but do not claim that an edit caused an AI citation from a before-and-after screenshot. Demand, competitor content, index refresh, model changes, and platform sampling all move.
If manually tracking answer presence, define a stable query panel, location, account state, device, and date. Store only what platform terms permit. Use the panel to observe themes, not to promise a universal “share of answers.”
Build a topic cluster with internal evidence
One comprehensive page cannot answer every stage. Create a hub that defines the problem and links to narrower implementation, comparison, risk, and case-evidence pages. Link back with descriptive anchor text. Retire or consolidate overlapping pages so they do not compete or repeat generic material.
An effective cluster might contain:
- an executive decision guide;
- a workflow-level implementation article;
- a current legal or regulatory boundary;
- a measurement and ROI guide;
- a technical integration page;
- an honest case study with method and limits; and
- a service page with scope, process, proof, and contact route.
Keep facts in one maintained source where possible. For changing thresholds, dates, prices, or regulatory positions, use a data or editorial owner and a review date. Mark materially updated content honestly; changing the date without changing the substance erodes trust.
Add editorial and claims controls
AI-assisted publishing should have a brief, source pack, accountable author or reviewer, claims check, plagiarism and duplication review, brand and legal review where needed, and final rendered-page QA. Verify every quotation, statistic, date, case result, link, and regulatory statement against the primary source.
UK marketing claims must remain legal, decent, honest, and truthful. The ASA’s CAP Code requires documentary evidence for objective claims and says marketing must not materially mislead. That applies to AI-generated copy as much as human copy.
Avoid:
- guaranteed ranking, citation, or lead claims;
- fabricated expertise, testimonials, authors, or locations;
- unsupported “best,” savings, compliance, or certification claims;
- hundreds of near-identical location or industry pages;
- hidden machine-targeted content;
- copied summaries that add no analysis;
- fake freshness; and
- publishing a source list the article does not actually use.
If a page recommends a regulated, financial, legal, medical, or safety decision, route it to appropriate specialist review and make scope clear.
Protect analytics and customer data
Measurement can involve identifiers, cookies, call tracking, CRM records, and inferred interests. Define what is necessary for attribution, choose a lawful design, apply consent requirements where relevant, minimise retention, restrict access, and avoid joining individual browsing with sensitive sales notes without a justified purpose.
Aggregate content performance where possible. Do not upload raw query, CRM, call, or customer data into an uncontrolled writing tool. The ICO accountability framework helps organisations assess governance, transparency, records, contracts, security, and rights. Review current ICO guidance after Data (Use and Access) Act changes rather than relying on an old cookie or analytics summary.
Run a 90-day answer-engine programme
Days 1–30: baseline and select. Choose one audience, service, and 10–20 high-value questions. Audit crawl/index health, existing duplication, content quality, internal links, conversion paths, author evidence, sources, and qualified lead baseline. Decide crawler policy.
Days 31–60: publish depth. Refresh or create a small cluster with direct answers, original operational evidence, primary sources, visible dates, clear limitations, honest schema, and strong internal links. Render-test desktop and mobile pages, validate structured data, and request recrawl where appropriate.
Days 61–90: observe and improve. Review Search Console, Bing search and AI Performance where available, analytics, CRM quality, and manual query observations. Interview sales about lead relevance. Improve weak answers and conversion paths; consolidate rather than multiplying thin pages.
Judge the pilot on improved qualified discovery and sales usefulness, not the number of published URLs.
Set pause and quality gates
Pause expansion when:
- pages are generated faster than expert review and source verification;
- material claims lack current primary evidence;
- content overlaps existing pages without a distinct purpose;
- structured data diverges from visible content;
- crawler, canonical, index, or rendering changes reduce discoverability;
- qualified engagement worsens despite more impressions;
- complaints, corrections, or misleading-claim risk rises;
- analytics collection exceeds the approved design;
- a platform metric is presented as ranking, traffic, or causation; or
- the team cannot maintain dates, links, and regulatory boundaries.
Remove or correct harmful claims promptly. Use noindex, consolidation, redirects, or archive decisions deliberately; do not leave a large estate of stale, near-duplicate answers.

Decision
Answer-engine optimisation is worthwhile when it improves the underlying information asset: clearer scope, original evidence, primary sources, technical access, honest metadata, and a conversion route that serves the reader. Platforms decide what they crawl and cite. The company’s controllable advantage is publishing work that a buyer, search system, salesperson, and subject-matter expert would all recognise as genuinely useful.
